Rab Mountain Marathon - Sat 26th/Sun 27th September 2009 (full results)

The Rab Mountain Marathon took place on the Howgill Fells over the weekend of 26th/27th September and is a two day score MM event. Day One was 19km long with 1000 feet of ascent; day two was 15km long with 1050 feet of ascent.

Nine Edges Endurance Race - Sunday 27th September 2009

The Nine Edges Endurances gives you the choice of whether to hike, run, climb or bike the route! It is a traverse from Fairholmes to the Robin Hood pub near Baslow – about 20 miles for hikers, runners and climbers, 32 miles for mountain bikers!!!!  Climbers also climb a route of their choice on each of the 9 gritstone edges.  It is over some rough moorland and some navigational ability is required.

The weather on the day was cloudy and breezy, much better for running than the hot weather experienced by runners earlier in the month at Askern and Newark. This event was a well organised club event along a scenic road course on outskirts of Chesterfield. The route takes a stepped ascent up to the highest point of the course before descending down to Ashgate Hospice and then a steady uphill section before the flattish finish back in Holmebrook Valley Park. The encouragement from the marshals, locals and Trevor Brown's family popping up along route was appreciated

Rousay Lap Half Marathon - 29th August 2009 (full results)

I was one of just 12 running entrants in the inaugural Rousay Lap - a half marathon around Rousay, which is one of Orkney's islands. The field also included 48 others - cyclists and walkers. Pretty fierce headwinds for about six miles and 400m of ascent made for a slower than usual time!

Bassingham Bash 5 - Saturday 8th August 2009(full results)

An accurate, pancake flat course, won in a quick 26 mins 25 seconds. 47 finishers. There should have been a third Strider racing but, briefly, he was delayed by: 1 Putting up a flatpack on the morning of the race, 2 Roadworks at Chesterfield, 3 Inexplicable 20 minute hold up on the A617 at J29, 4 Missing a turning at Mansfield, 5 A617 closed at Rainworth due to an accident, 6 Diversion on A617 west of Newark due to more roadworks. An excellent performance from Mr Clever; Dave ran in with his young daughter.

Robin Hood Fell Race - Tuesday 28th July 2009 (full results)

Arh....the benefits of being tall: always in the front seat of a car ("You've got long legs, you'll have to sit in the front"); always got a good view at any sports event ("Who scored the goal mate, I didn't quite see the ball go in the net"); always able to reach where no one else can ("can you just reach that off the shelf for me luv"); and always banging the old nut ("I didn't see that overhanging branch, but I can now I'm flat on the ground and can only see stars and lots of blood"). I don't remember much of the race itself even though I managed eventually to get up, jog a little, then rejoin the race for the last 4 miles (and overtake Simon!!). I'm told the course was very, very muddy and technically difficult; I'll take people's word for it as I was busy trying to protect what turned out to be a sprained ankle acquired in said heavy fall. Incidently the Edale Mountain Rescue crew were responsible for giving me the Terry Butcher head dress at the end (see photo below).

A lovely morning for a run with a 10am start at the Lincolnshire agricultural show. Well organised and well marshaled with a nearly flat course which I think would be good for a PB. I was in line for a Strider + 65 PB but started too fast and then suffered in the last 3 miles. There were 217 finishers.

Stoney Middleton Fell Run - Thursday 23rd July 2009 (full results)
Three Striders ran in this 5 mile/650ft ascent fell race: the results for Trevor and Carol are below; the third decided to give the field a 5 minute start by arriving late! Seeing the last of the runners disappearing up the road and throuigh a kissing gate the intreped Strider, adreneline pumping, managed to catch up with race and then pass 75 runners to record an unofficial time of approx 41 minutes.

This race took place on the tracks and trails around the pine woods of the park and was well organised and marshaled. It also had a very sensible start time (for us old folk) of 11-30 am. It was a nice morning for running and the rain held off until we had finished. There were 5 Striders participating out of 641 finishers.

Dartford half marathon - Sunday 19th July 2009 (full results)

Six miles run on pavements, a cross country section plus a footbridge thrown in for good measure - not a fast course. It's funny how the the adverts for races make declarations about the rural course and marvellous scenery. Well, there was a good view from the top but as you may gather from the photo, our Strider was in no position to take it in with two guys breathing down his neck. This trip south was made as part of a visit to catch up with the family - I briefly saw my brother manning a feed station with his scout group! Winning time 69:33; 603 finishers.

Titled the 10km, but more like just under 6 miles. A lovely summers evening, blue sky and sunshine and not too warm. A demanding course with 2 hard climbs. Chip butty afterwards (4 chips on a small breadcake!) Finished outside the pub, so straight in there for a pint. Come on Striders, let's have more entries next year for a no thrills race in the true tradition of amateurism!
